NIST 800-53, also known as NIST Special Publication 800-53, is a published guideline from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. It replaced NIST 800-26, and recommends security controls for federal information systems and organizations and documents security controls. These security controls apply to all federal information systems except those designed for national security. NIST 800-53 covers the steps in the Risk Management Framework that address security control selection for federal information systems as detailed in Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 200.
